International Conference: "Transformations in the Cultural and Media Industries (CMI)"

International Conference
"Transformations in the Cultural and Media Industries (CMI)"
September 25, 26 and 27, 2006, Paris

Since the end of the eighties the Cultural and Media Industries have
undergone profound change. This has given rise occasionally to some
rather spectacular phenomena, which have received extensive attention
in the media, and been commented on by "experts", policy makers and
economic decision-makers. Among the themes which have been most
frequently discussed one might mention notably: the move towards
deregulation; the various huge merger operations bringing together
industrial groups and financial centres which have lead, against a
background of globalisation, to an unprecedented degree of
concentration; the flow of ideas and players around the notion of
cultural exception and cultural diversity; the development of new
cultural, informational or communication products accessible via the
Internet or via mobile telephones or similar tools; movements opposed
to existing commercial offers marked by the development of small
structures of production targeted at micro - markets but also by the
development of piracy; shift in the balance between content
providers, software manufacturers, hardware manufacturers and network
operators; the development of types of content, such as "reality
television", which have appeared in Europe over the last few years.

How should these developments be interpreted? Do they in fact
constitute a major transformation? An examination of the current
research into the Culture Industry, whether from the point of view of
economics, law, sociology, political science, history, philosophy or
communication and information sciences, the number of widely
differing and contradictory approaches to the same issues is
striking. A process needs to be launched which will end the current
dispersal of existing studies. A new framework is needed.

This is therefore the main objective of the international symposium
on transformations in the Cultural and Media Industries organized the
25, 26 and 27 September 2006 at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme,
Paris Nord.

constructions, contexts, consequences

21-23 September 2006
University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

A major international conference organised by DREAM (Danish Research Centre on Education and Advanced Media Materials).

School no longer holds a monopoly on education. Learning is distributed across a range of sites and settings, and media and ICTs hold important stakes in this process of diversification. This conference will present and discuss the most advanced and exciting research on informal learning, its mediatized constructions, socio-cultural contexts and educational consequences.

Conference goals
A major aim of the conference is to bring together an international forum of scholars from a range of disciplines including media and ICT studies, education, psychology, anthropology, sociology and cultural studies - and to promote dialogue within and across research traditions.  We also aim to develop dialogue between researchers, educators and producers of new learning resources.

Conference themes
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
Informal learning between creativity and competencies
Informal learning: digital divides or new citizenships?
o  Repertoires of learning: aesthetics, genre and the meaning of context
Media and ICT literacies and conceptual learning
o  Planning and production of innovative learning resources.

Papers are encouraged from researchers with interests in any of these specific themes as well as the general issues of the conference.

Submissions
If you would like to present a paper, please submit a 400 word abstract with an indication of which of the above themes you will address. Abstracts must include the title of your paper along with author name(s), affiliation, and contact details (postal address, telephone, fax and email address). Abstracts (format: pdf, doc, rtf) should be submitted to mail@dream.dk

After the conference, authors are invited to submit revised versions of their papers from which contributions will be selected for a volume focusing on the main themes of the conference.

CFP: First European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning

See http://www.ectel06.org/ for more info.

Call for Papers
First European Conference on
Technology Enhanced Learning
Innovative Approaches for Learning and Knowledge Sharing
Crete, Greece - October 1-4, 2006
Organized by the PRO-LC Cluster
URL: http://www.ectel06.org

With the shift towards the knowledge society, changing working conditions
and the continuous evolution of information and communication technologies,
peoples' knowledge and skills need continuous development. Technology
enhanced
learning is one of the strategic objectives of the EU/IST Work
Programme, with the goal of "improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness
of learning, for individuals and organizations, independent of time,
place and
pace." Innovative infrastructuctures, methods and approaches are needed to
reach this goal, and will facilitate transfer and sharing of knowledge
between
individuals and in organisations. For e-learning, as in e-commerce and
e-business, systemic changes wrought by emerging technologies are also
changing the relationships between consumption and production - in this
case of knowledge - as what many call 'Web 2.0' becomes more interactive
and user-generated content becomes more widespread.

The First European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning provides
a unique forum for all research related to technology-enhanced learning, as
well as its interactions with knowledge management, business processes and
work environments. It will provide a competitive yet broad enough forum
for technology enhanced learning research in Europe and world-wide through
specialized workshops and the main conference. The conference will provide
unique networking possibilities for participating researchers throughout the
week and include project meetings and discussions for several EU/IST
projects
funded within the 6th framework program under the action line of
"Technology-
Enhanced Learning and Access to Cultural Heritage".

We welcome submissions describing innovative research on all relevant
issues,
focusing on aspects from computer science, business and/or education, as
well as experience reports and case studies describing innovative
applications
of new learning environments and approaches.

EC-TEL 2006 invites submissions in the following categories:
• Papers and posters
• Doctoral consortium papers
• Industrial reports
• Workshops
Relevant topics for the conference include, but are not limited to:
Collaborative Learning:
Learning Communities, Distributed Teams, Instructional Methods for
Collaborative
Learning, Problem Solving Support, Collaborative Knowledge Building and
Sharing, Collaborative Games, Online Experiments

Personalized Learning:
Reasoning Techniques, Adaptation Patterns and Techniques, Data Mining,

PRESENCE 2006-CALL FOR PAPERS

PRESENCE 2006
9th Annual International Workshop on Presence
Cleveland, Ohio, USA
Cleveland State University
August 24-26, 2006

Submission deadline: April 3, 2006

Full details on the web at <http://ispr.info>

OVERVIEW

Academics and practitioners with an interest in the concept
of (tele)presence are invited to submit their work for
presentation at PRESENCE 2006 at Cleveland State University
in Cleveland, Ohio, August 24-26, 2006.

The ninth in a series of highly successful international
workshops, PRESENCE 2006 will provide an open discussion
forum to share ideas regarding concepts and theories,
measurement techniques, technology, and applications related
to presence, the psychological state or subjective perception
in which a person fails to accurately and completely
acknowledge the role of technology in an experience,
including the sense of 'being there' experienced by users of
advanced media such as virtual reality.

The concept of presence has been the focus of increasing
scholarly attention since at least Minsky's "Telepresence" in
1980. Recently there has been a burst of funded research
activity in this area with the European FET Presence Research
initiative. What do we really know about presence and its
determinants? How can presence be successfully delivered with
today's technology? This conference invites papers that are
based on empirical results from studies of presence and
related issues and/or that make substantial advances in
theoretical understanding of presence and/or that contribute
to the technology for the delivery of presence. High quality
papers which make substantial contributions to the field are
sought; submissions will be rigorously evaluated by peer
reviewers.

Work accepted for presentation will be included in the
official conference proceedings and posted on the ISPR web
site. Some of the presented papers will be selected for
publication in one or more special issues of CyberPsychology
& Behavior or Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual
Environments.

PRESENCE 2006 takes place in Cleveland and is hosted by
Cleveland State University. The conference is organized by
ISPR, the International Society for Presence Research.

TOPICS

Submissions of papers, demonstrations, and panels that
represent completed or ongoing work are encouraged in areas
including but not limited to:

* Explications of the presence concept

* Presence evaluation/measurement methodologies

communities

* Social/affective interfaces, virtual agents, parasocial
interactions

* Presence-associated technologies:
- Immersive, interactive, multimodal displays
- Advanced broadcast and cinematic displays (stereoscopic TV,
HDTV, IMAX)

century and beyond

CONFERENCE FORMAT

Like the earlier workshops, PRESENCE 2006 will have an
interactive format in which all participants (attendees,
presenters, invited speakers) attend each of the sessions as
well as several social events, allowing participants to
exchange ideas and build knowledge together as the conference
progresses.

The conference will feature keynote presentations by
prominent presence scholars (details to be announced soon).
